Facilitating Career Day with Teens: The "Would You Rather?" Method

Would you rather… Work with the natural world <or> Work with technology ?

We asked that question and watched as a group of eager teenagers grabbed a sticky note for their choice of answer, then add it to a worksheet.

That day, the worksheet said “My Career Path” in bold letters across the top.

Each group heard a set of five “Would You Rather” questions with an answer that helped them define simple work place preferences.

The preference for that first question about natural world and technology, references “What I Like To Work With.”

The sixth square on the worksheet has a reflection on the preferences chosen, and a fill-in for “Problems I Care About.”

Part of a Career Day, we only had 15 minutes per group, and in total, I played "Would You Rather" with 21 students and 4 teachers.

Each student entered the room with curiosity and left with a thoughtful smile.

The outcome – a wall of completed worksheets with ideas for the connection between personal interests and a career path.

Reflecting on that day we find ourselves muttering, ‘that was fun’ and are thinking of Bree Groff's book "Today Was Fun".
